My son Tommy is autistic, and with his permission, I’d love to share a little bit of his story.

We learned that Tommy was autistic when he was in elementary school. He is high-functioning, incredibly intelligent, and deeply self-motivated. He thrives on routine, predictability, and familiarity—these help him navigate a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

​

As a boy, Tommy loved trains—especially Thomas the Train. Today, as a young adult, he spends his free time playing video games and working toward something remarkable. He’s putting himself through college while holding down a full-time job, and he's nearly finished earning his degree in Cybersecurity. He amazes me every day with what he’s accomplished—often beyond what I could ever do myself.

As a mom, my greatest hope for Tommy is that he finds his place in the world—his niche—a space where he feels fulfilled, happy, and successful. Autism presents unique challenges, and for Tommy, one of the most consistent has been navigating social environments built for neurotypical norms. But he's constantly learning, growing, and adapting—and I'm so proud of him.

This journey has inspired a passion in me to raise awareness and support for autism research and services.
